EU importers oppose anti-dumping tax on Chinese shoes

Chinanews, Guangzhou, Apr.17 (By Yu Lan) - Taking effect on the 7th of
this month, the European Union (EU) began to levy six months of
provisional anti-dumping tariff on China-made leather shoes. A buyer from
the Netherlands participating in the 99th session of the Chinese Export
Commodities Fair (Canton Fair or CECF) said that such a move was a crazy
action that would cause tremendous losses to shoe importers.
According to the European Commission's preliminary arbitration, the EU
began to levy a 4.8% anti-dumping tariff on China-made leather shoes of
25 tariff numbers at zero o'clock on April 7. Afterwards the tariff rate
will be raised step by step and ultimately reach 19.4%.
This decision received strong protests from EU importers. G. J. R. Ankone
from a shoe company in the Netherlands told the reporter on the first day
of the 99th CECF that such a move was absolutely incorrect and was a
policy mistake that would sharply increase the cost of importers.
Ankone said that no one knows what would happen in six months, "therefore
we only place short-term orders for the moment." He added that his
company would probably transfer its orders to India and Indonesia in the
future.
Affected by this decision, the number of EU shoe buyers taking part in
this Canton Fair reported obvious reduction over previous sessions. Many
exhibitors said that they received no EU buyers all day long.
CECF spokesperson Xu Bing indicated that trade volume of shoes would
definitely be affected at this session.
It was learned that trade value of shoes reached US$850 million during
the 98th session of CECF, and the 99th session has 946 shoe exhibitors
who take up 1,330 exhibition booths.
