Market rises on first day after yuan reform

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-23 19:24:47

(Source: China Daily)

China's stock market rises on first day after yuan reform.

July 23 - Thursday's yuan revaluation showed an immediate upward impact
on China's stock market. However, analysts are cautious of how long this
will last.
The benchmark Shanghai composite index climbed 2.5 per cent to end
Friday's trading at 1,046.32 points, with a turnover more than double
that of the previous day.
Airline and petrochemical stocks led the day's active trading as the
biggest beneficiary of the yuan move, traders said.
Shares in Hainan Airlines, a regional carrier based in South China's
Hainan Province, soared almost 10 per cent to end at 2.33 yuan (29 US
cents), on investors' expectations that China's carriers would face lower
financing costs as they have a large chunk of their borrowings in foreign
currencies.
Prices of China Eastern rose 7.11 per cent and 4.18 per cent for China
Southern.
Investors also poured money into refiners that rely heavily on oil
imports and thus are expected to benefit from lower costs.
Sinopec, Asia's top refiner, rose 5.8 per cent to 3.83 yuan (47 US cents).
"The 2-per-cent yuan revaluation is a direct trigger, but it is only part
of the reason for today's market upturn," said Ba Shusong, a senior
economist with the State Council's Development Research Centre.
"June's economic data, signalling the government's loosening of its
credit tightening policy, plus the progressing reform on the non-tradable
shares, also helped boost investors' morale."
But some analysts were more pessimistic about the market.
The positive impact of the yuan revaluation "may last only two or three
days," said Xu Gang, research head at CITIC Securities.
"The yuan move, in the longer term, will have a negative impact on
China's stock market, especially on the country's exporters," Xu said.
The change will blunt their price edge in overseas markets and burden
them with higher production and operating costs as many pay their bills
and employees in RMB.
During Friday's trading, investors shunned exporters. For example, the
textile firm Youngor Group Co Ltd fell 1.75 per cent to 3.36 yuan (41 US
cents).
Following China's move, Malaysia also unpegged its ringgit from the US
dollar to replace it with a managed float.
The new yuan regime will likely lead to further yuan revaluation over
time and encourage greater currency appreciation in other Asian
countries, thus leading to a burden shift of the US dollar adjustment
from Europe to Asia, said David Woo, head of global forex strategy at
Barclays Capital.
At the first-day trading after revaluation, the yuan closed weaker at
8.1111 to the US dollar.

Wang Qingyi, a collector from Shandong's Zouping County, shows 7 volumes
of official version of Kang Xi Dictionary (a keynote Chinese dictionary
compiled in 1710) that he collected on July 18, 2005. The dictionary,
designed in Song (960-1279) printing style, consists of 40 volumes. The
16cm times 28.5 cm dictionary was chiefly in the possession of the
emperor, using it as an award for high officials who have made
significant contributions to the country. Such dictionaries are rarely
seen in the folk. According to authoritative collectors, there are at
most ten sets of official edition of Kangxi Dictionaries in the world.

two mainland joint ventures shifted a disappointing 265,000 vehicles in

created with fine sand from Rizhao beach, paper, and glue made by Ge
himself. Being enlarged with 1:2 ratio from the original size, the
painting took Ge 15 months for production. Unlike other sand paintings,
this one is color-fast and firm and can be folded and rolled easily,

New Party chairman arrives in Guangzhou

(Source: CRIENGLISH.com)

GUANGZHOU, July 6 - The New Party, a third opposition party in Taiwan,
has launched a "journey of Chinese nation," as it calls, to the mainland.
The 30-member delegation led by Yu Muming, chairman of the New Party,
arrived Wednesday afternoon in the southern city of Guangzhou, the first
stop of the eight-day trip (from July 6 to 13). The delegation will also
visit the cities of Nanjing, Dalian and Beijing.
Yu Muming told reporters that the trip follows the Kuomintang's landmark
visit to the Chinese mainland in April and that of the People First Party
soon after, and will help improve ties across the Taiwan Strait.
The mainland visit is called "the New Party's delegation to visit the
mainland in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the victory over the
War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression." Taiwan media said the
trip could be abbreviated as the "journey of Chinese nation".
In Guangzhou, the delegation will pay tribute to the Huanghuagang 72
Martyrs' Tombs, where 72 people killed in an abortive uprising to
overthrow the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) were honored.
In Nanjing, the delegation will pay tribute to the Mausoleum of Dr. Sun
Yat-sen, forerunner of China's democratic revolution, and visit the
Memorial Hall of the Victims in the Nanjing Massacre conducted by
Japanese invading troops in World War II. In Beijing, the delegation will
visit the Memorial Hall of the War of Resistance against Japanese
Aggression and have discussions with mainland scholars in a symposium.

FIFA World Youth Championship final match against Nigeria, the
Netherlands July 2, 2005. Argentina won the match 2 -1 to win the
championship for the fifth time. (Reuters)

UTRECHT, Netherlands, July 3 - Argentina won the World Youth Championship
on Saturday, defeating Nigeria 2-1 on Lionel Messi's two penalty kicks
for a record fifth title.
Messi, a Barcelona midfielder, finished as the top scorer in tournament
with six goals. Nigeria was seeking Africa's first title in FIFA's
championship for players under 20.
Defending champion Brazil finished in third place in the three-week,
24-nation event, defeating Morocco 2-1 behind late goals by Edcarlos and
Rafael Sobis.
Messi, who turned 18 during the tournament, was voted the winner of the
Golden Ball as the best player of the competition, beating Nigerians John
Obi Mikel and Taye Taiwo.
Messi scored in the 40th and 72nd minutes. Nigeria's goal came in the
53rd minute on a spectacular diving header by Chinedu Ogbuke.
Argentina opened the scoring when Messi converted a penalty kick he had
forced. The star playmaker was on a 40-yard run through the Nigerian
defense when Dele Adeleye floored him near the goal line.
Nigeria evened the score 13 minutes later on Ogbuke's header from 10
yards out in which he reached back and connected on a cross by Olubayo
Adefemi from the right side.
The deciding goal was set up when Monday James brought down substitute
Sergio Aguero. This time, Messi chose the right corner of the net for his
penalty kick.
"If you play in the final like this, you don't give up penalties like
that," Nigeria coach Samson Siasia said.

Crude oil flows from Kazakhstan to China

www.chinanews.cn 2006-05-01 15:54:09

Chinanews, May 1 - On April 30, oil from the Republic of Kazakhstan
arrived at the Alataw Pass in China's Xinjiang, after a 1,800-kilometer
"trudge." It is learned that the Alataw Pass-Dushanzi crude oil pipeline
within China has been ready to receive transmitted oil. Experts indicate
that this means that Kazakhstan will start to supply oil to China this
May, marking the beginning of the age of China's oil supply through
trans-frontier land-way pipelines.
The Sino-Kazakhstan oil pipeline starts from Atyrau, a coastal city in
Kazakhstan, in the west and finally reaches Dushanzi Petrochemical
Company Ltd. in China's Xinjiang, with the whole length exceeding 3,000
kilometers.
Xia Yishan, director of the China Energy Strategy Research Institute,
revealed that only half of the recent 10 million tons of crude oil came
from Kazakhstan and the other half was provided by Russia. This pipeline
indicates the energy cooperation relationship among China, Kazakhstan and
Russia.
In terms of specific functions of this oil pipeline, Xia Yishan made his
own analysis: First, it is conducive to China's strategy of diversified
oil supply; second, China not only needs a sufficient quantity of oil but
also demands stable, safe and sustainable oil supply; third, this
pipeline will play an important supplementary role in China's domestic
oil supply, especially the west-to-east oil and gas transmission project.

EU importers oppose anti-dumping tax on Chinese shoes

www.chinanews.cn 2006-04-17 15:19:04

Chinanews, Guangzhou, Apr.17 (By Yu Lan) - Taking effect on the 7th of
this month, the European Union (EU) began to levy six months of
provisional anti-dumping tariff on China-made leather shoes. A buyer from
the Netherlands participating in the 99th session of the Chinese Export
Commodities Fair (Canton Fair or CECF) said that such a move was a crazy
action that would cause tremendous losses to shoe importers.
According to the European Commission's preliminary arbitration, the EU
began to levy a 4.8% anti-dumping tariff on China-made leather shoes of
25 tariff numbers at zero o'clock on April 7. Afterwards the tariff rate
will be raised step by step and ultimately reach 19.4%.
This decision received strong protests from EU importers. G. J. R. Ankone
from a shoe company in the Netherlands told the reporter on the first day
of the 99th CECF that such a move was absolutely incorrect and was a
policy mistake that would sharply increase the cost of importers.
Ankone said that no one knows what would happen in six months, "therefore
we only place short-term orders for the moment." He added that his
company would probably transfer its orders to India and Indonesia in the
future.
Affected by this decision, the number of EU shoe buyers taking part in
this Canton Fair reported obvious reduction over previous sessions. Many
exhibitors said that they received no EU buyers all day long.
CECF spokesperson Xu Bing indicated that trade volume of shoes would
definitely be affected at this session.
It was learned that trade value of shoes reached US$850 million during
the 98th session of CECF, and the 99th session has 946 shoe exhibitors
who take up 1,330 exhibition booths.
