Guangzhou sets up human genome cloning banks

www.chinanews.cn 2006-04-10 17:34:45

Chinanews, Apr. 10 C The Guangzhou Funeng Gene Co., Ltd. has recently
develped on its own cloning bank and a highly efficiently expressed
cloning bank, as highly effective medium carriers for the
multi-functional coding protein of human full-length cDNA. The two banks
can help study the relation of interactive functions between proteins in
viruses such as SARS, bird flu and hepatitis B viruses, and proteins in a
human body. Study of the interactions between virus proteins and human
proteins is helpful for scientists in their research of producing more
effective vaccines against these viruses.
Experts say the establishment of the two banks has a great significance
in biomedicine research and its development, in that it forms as a
technological platform and lays a material basis for improving Chinas
own biomedicine researchcapability, especially in Guangdong province. By
using the technologies of the two banks, scientists can study the
interaction between proteins in viruses such as SARS, bird flu and
hepatitis B, and proteins inside human bodies. The study will help
scientists to develop vaccines that can prohibit disease causative
agents, find methods that can quickly diagnose these diseases and
medicines that can treat them.
The highly efficiently expressed cloning bank for human full-length DNA
was a research achievement made by Dr. Yang Shuwei, who once studied in
the United States and came back to China to set up his own company, the
Guangzhou Funeng Gene Co., Ltd., in 2000. The bank provides a
technological platform for the study of human genome, currently the
worlds hottest research discipline in the bio-technology field, as well
as the study of proteins.
Scientists working in world-class universities and laboratories will
appraise the application of these medium carriers and the cloning system
after they are delivered as products into the international market.

China less dependent on crude oil imports

www.chinanews.cn 2006-04-03 16:59:48

Chinanews, Apr. 3 - "As the rapid growth of domestic production capacity
greatly increased the total output, China's dependency of production
material imports in 2005 saw evident drops," says the annual report on
China's production material market development jointly released by the
Market Operation Regulation Department of the Ministry of Commerce and
China Logistics Information Center last Friday.
According to the report, the average dependency ratio of imports of
China's 30 categories of main production materials was 11.0% in 2005,
declining 1.9 percentage points and 2.4 percentage points over that of
2004 and 2003 respectively. In particular, the trend of constantly
growing dependency ratio of petroleum imports was initially held in
check. In 2005, China's total crude oil resource (domestic output plus
imports) amounted to 307.66 million tons, a year-on-year increase of
3.67%. The overall demand (domestic consumption plus exports) stood at
309.78 million tons, rising 5.9% year on year. Dependency ratio of crude
oil imports declined 0.07 percentage points from the increase rate of
41.29% in 2004. This is the first time for this figure to decline since
the year 1998.
At the same time, the dependency of rolled steel imports saw an evident
drop, and that of copper, aluminum, lead, alumina, and plastic materials
all fell at different rates, indicating improved self-sufficiency of
production materials.
Since the dependency of production material imports fell, and prices in
the international market were much higher than price levels in the
domestic market, the increasing demand of exports became an important
factor to drive up the demand in the domestic production material market.

RMB depreciated for two consecutive days

www.chinanews.cn 2006-03-10 15:15:35

Chinanews, Mar.10 - RMB depreciated two days in a row. After falling 43
basis points against the U.S. dollar on March 7th, it kept the downtrend
and fell another 50 basis points the following day. The US dollar
exchange rate against the RMB rose from 8.0382 to 8.0475 on the 8th,
indicating that the RMB has depreciated by 0.116%.
During the trading day on the 8th, the US dollar versus the RMB exchange
rate once shot up to 8.0492 and closed at an average auction rate of
8.0487. It seems that the impetus forcing down the RMB has not been
entirely dissipated.
Analysts pointed out that it was the first time in the history of RMB
trading that the RMB dropped sharply for two consecutive days. After the
RMB exchange rate regime reform, the currency has occasionally
depreciated by a large magnitude on one single trading session or
declined for several days in a row, but the one-day decline tends to be
small and the cumulative margin was smaller than the margin of decline in
the last two days.
Brokers believe that this sharp depreciation has something to do with the
sudden rebound of the US dollar. Recently, the US dollar turned stronger
continuously and investors anticipated that the US would raise its
interest rates once again. An official from the US Federal Reserve said
that the US economy has strong growth momentum and if the economy grew at
a faster pace than expected, the US Federal Reserve would raise interest
rates again. After this remark was made, the US dollar appreciated
against all Asian currencies and the RMB is no an exception.
Since 2004, investors have been expecting RMB appreciation. China's
central bank implemented the RMB exchange rate regime reform in July 2005
and revalued the US dollar exchange rate against the RMB from the
original 8.27 to 8.11. Many industry insiders forecast that the RMB will
continue to appreciate by about 3% in 2006.

China to maintain stable RMB exchange rate

RMB appreciated by 0.4% since July
RMB made 11-year new high against the dollar
