Baidi City looks like an isolated island

www.chinanews.cn 2005-11-03 15:44:56

After the Three Gorges Project carries out water storage at a water level
of 135 meters, the Baidi (White Emperor) City shows a view of an isolated
island. In 2006 when the Three Gorges Reservoir realizes water storage at
a 175-meter water level, the Baidi City will become a thoroughly isolated
island and the road linking the Baidi City and Fengjie County will be cut
off. In order to bring convenience to tourists visiting the Baidi City,
the local government is pushing forward to build a 380-meter long and
7-meter wide bridge with roof, which will connect the Baidi City and
Fengjie County.

Rogge thinks highly of China as sports games host

www.chinanews.cn 2005-10-17 14:38:27

Chinanews, Shanghai, Oct. 16 (By Li Jing) - International Olympic
Committee President Jacques Rogge appeared at Shanghai International
Circuit today and witnessed the first "join-hands" of Beijing Olympics
and F1 Grand Prix. Shortly after his stay in Nanjing for the 10th
National Games of China, Rogge also thought highly of China's
organization of F1 Grand Prix.
Rogge told Chinese media that a brief stay in Nanjing has impressed him
deeply with the 10th National Games, the enthusiasm of Chinese people in
sports and the excellent organization of the event. The F1 Grand Prix in
Shanghai is also well organized. Thus he drew the conclusion that China
is an excellent organizer of sports games.
Although the Beijing Olympics is a much larger and more grandiose event
than F1 Grand Prix, the essence of organization is very similar - to
guarantee smooth process of the games.
Prior to the interview with the media, Rogge watched nearly twenty
minutes of the performance at the opening ceremony of the F1 Grand Prix
and showed great interest in the short and precise opening ceremony. He
confidently concluded that the Beijing Olympics would be a great success.

Is Lenovo stepping on mine field when it bought IBM's PC?

www.chinanews.cn 2005-09-30 13:40:54

Chinanews, Sept. 29 - In acquiring IBM's PC division in a lightning
strike, Lenovo not only created its only miracle, it also created the
miracle of a Chinese enterprise going international. After 150 days of
Lenovo completing its acquisition, Chief Operating Officer Liu Jun talked
about the whole acquisition process on September 28 in Shanghai for the
first time and said that acquiring the IBM division was like walking on a
"mine field".
Liu Jun said that China is a good market for laptop computers, but
combining the two companies are hard work and will take time. In fact,
having quickly bought IBM's PC division, Lenovo has yet to completely
digest its acquisition. When an international company has been totally
acquired by a domestic company, the two will have differences in culture,
management and other details that cannot be resolved in a short period of
time. He said that China's corporate culture and management style are not
the same as those for American companies. Chinese enterprises tend to
emphasize stringent management, emphasize obedience while in the West the
emphasis is on a more liberal culture that relies on personal
self-discipline and personal rights. This will create challenges in
merging two corporate cultures. Lenovo must have an all-encompassing
culture to resolve these problems. At the same time, Liu Jun said that
Chinese corporate culture has its own strong points, but how to persuade
American staff to accept such culture is an important problem that needs
resolution.
It was understood that since 2000, Lenovo's business has been confined to
a single PC product line and its growth rate is decelerating. After
numerous tries, Lenovo finally seized the opportunity to make a lightning
acquisition of IBM's PC division. Liu Jun said candidly that at the
beginning he did not look favorably on this acquisition and most of the
real decision makers at that time all thought buying IBM was like walking
into a mine field. However, now that Lenovo has completed its integration
with IBM's markets, the time is now to focus on concrete steps to
integrate the rest of the two companies.

was so deeply impressed by the city's scenery that instead of
sight-seeing, she arranged all her painting stuff and kept on painting
all day from the morning to the evening on Oct. 20. She said it was
meaningful by "collecting" Shanghai with her paintbrush. Touched by this
painter's spirits and the beauty of the Bund (Waitan), tourists all round
requested to take pictures with her in front of the real Bund and the
Bund inside her paintings.

China offers nuclear assurance to Rumsfeld

www.chinanews.cn 2005-10-21 09:34:54

(Source: China Daily/AP)

Visiting US Defense Secretary Donald H. rumsfeld visits the Summer Palace
on October 20, 2005.

Oct. 21 - The commander of China's nuclear missile forces told Defense
Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld on Wednesday that in an armed conflict China
would not be the first to use nuclear weapons.
Chinese Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission Guo Boxiong,
right, shows the way to U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, left, at
the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing on Wednesday October 19, 2005.
Gen. Jing Zhiyuan, commander of the Second Artillery, which operates the
country's growing arsenal of nuclear missiles, offered the assurance
while hosting Rumsfeld as the first foreigner to visit his headquarters,
according to two U.S. officials who participated in the meeting.
The officials briefed reporters afterward only on condition of anonymity
because of the visit's sensitivity. They said Jing told Rumsfeld no
foreigner had entered the command headquarters in its 39-year history.
Rumsfeld signed a large, new and otherwise empty guest book.
The Chinese rejected a Rumsfeld request to visit their national military
command center in the Western Hills.
Jing disavowed a recent public suggestion by another Chinese general that
the United States could be targeted for a nuclear strike if it intervened
in a conflict over Taiwan.
Rumsfeld aides who were present during the discussions quoted Jing as
saying it was "completely groundless" to say China was targeting any
country with its strategic nuclear forces.
Jing's operations chief, Senior Col. Kang Hong Gui, gave Rumsfeld a
briefing, complete with Microsoft PowerPoint graphics, on the command's
structure and missile forces training, without details about the numbers
of Chinese missiles.
Later, in a meeting with Rumsfeld at the Great Hall of the People,
President Hu Jintao said the visit to the Second Artillery headquarters
and Rumsfeld's other discussions in Beijing will "help the military
forces of our two countries to better enhance their mutual understanding
and friendship."
Hu and Rumsfeld also discussed President Bush's planned visit to Beijing
in November, and they agreed to speed up plans to increase military
educational exchanges, a goal Bush has endorsed.
On his first visit to China as defense secretary, Rumsfeld delivered an
address to the Central Party School and fielded questions from several
students and faculty members.
Chinese officials required U.S. reporters to leave the room after the
initial exchange, as planned.
Later, at a joint news conference at the Ministry of Defense, Rumsfeld's
counterpart, Gen. Cao Gangchuan, said U.S.-China relations are strong,
although he noted that it had been five years since an American secretary
of defense visited China. He called Rumsfeld's visit a "big event."
Asked about the Pentagon's assertion in a report to Congress last July
that China has vastly understated its defense spending, Cao said it would
be "simply impossible" to increase the budget on the scale cited by the
Pentagon because China is focusing its resources on fighting domestic
poverty.
"It is not necessary and not possible, actually, for us to massively
increase the defense budget," Cao said, speaking through an interpreter.
He defended the accuracy of China's report that its 2005 defense budget
is about $29 billion, compared with the $90 billion the Pentagon claims
is the true figure.
Even calculating it at a more recent exchange rate, the budget comes to
$30.2 billion, Cao said.
"That is, indeed, the true budget we have today," he said.
The atmosphere surrounding Rumsfeld's visit appeared friendly and
optimistic, with Cao saying the two countries have a broad range of
shared interests and a solid footing for building cooperation.
Rumsfeld applauded China's dramatic economic successes, noting that when
he first visited Beijing in 1974 as President Gerald R. Ford's chief of
staff, the streets were filled with bicycles, not cars.
